How RevolutionEd Uses AI & Algorithms

We believe you should understand how our learning tools work. This page explains, in plain language, every place RevolutionEd uses artificial intelligence or an automatic decision — what it does, what information it uses, and the human oversight and choices you have. We provide this disclosure so families, students, and schools can make informed choices (Texas SCOPE Act, Tex. Bus. & Com. Code ch. 509 — advertising & algorithm disclosure, § 509.055).

The short version: our AI features assist a teacher — they do not make any solely-automated decision that has a legal or similarly significant effect about a student. A teacher can review, edit, reject, or regenerate AI-generated content, and where a feature makes an automatic decision, a school can opt a student out in favor of teacher-set values. We do not use these algorithms for targeted advertising, and we do not sell student data.

Adaptive reading-level progression Automatic decision

Suggests reading-level progression from assessment results.

  • Uses: Assessment results and grade level
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: A teacher can review and override the level, and a school can opt out.

AI tutor / reflection chat Assists a teacher

Provides an AI tutor for learning conversations and reflections.

  • Uses: Student chat messages and lesson context
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: The conversation is advisory and visible to the teacher.

AI-assisted literacy grading (expression-of-ideas + pronunciation) Assists a teacher

Suggests provisional scores for selected literacy work.

  • Uses: Student work in selected literacy practice modules
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: A teacher approves or changes the provisional score before it counts.

Learning-narrative character & scene media generation Assists a teacher

Creates character and scene media for learning stories.

  • Uses: An optional student photo and story prompts
  • Provider: Google Gemini for art and narration; scene story text uses Google Gemini, with OpenAI as a fallback
  • Review: A teacher reviews the media before sharing it; it can be replaced or regenerated.

Lesson individualization (IEP / accommodation aware) Assists a teacher

Adapts lesson content to support a teacher's instruction.

  • Uses: Lesson content and learning accommodations
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: A teacher reviews the content before sharing it with students.

MakeIT Secure social-engineering simulation Assists a teacher

Powers a teacher-configured cybersecurity practice simulation.

  • Uses: Student responses in the practice simulation
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: A teacher reviews the results; they are not a disciplinary record.

Pronunciation assessment (spoken-sentence scoring) Assists a teacher

Analyzes a spoken sentence and provides formative pronunciation feedback.

  • Uses: A spoken sentence, used to provide pronunciation feedback
  • Provider: Microsoft Azure Speech and Google Gemini, with OpenAI as a fallback for the written feedback
  • Review: The feedback is advisory; a teacher sees and interprets the result.

Read-aloud passage narration (text-to-speech) Assists a teacher

Reads passages and word pronunciations aloud.

  • Uses: Reading passages and word pronunciations; no voice is recorded
  • Provider: Google Gemini (voice); AI-generated passage text uses Google Gemini, with OpenAI as a fallback
  • Review: This is an accessibility aid, not a score or an automatic decision.

SAT / assessment AI question generation Assists a teacher

Creates practice questions and explanations.

  • Uses: Assessment type, grade, and standard
  • Provider: Google Gemini (primary); OpenAI (fallback / administrator-selectable)
  • Review: An educator reviews the material; it is a practice aid, not an official grade.
Safety systems (behind the scenes). Beyond the features above, we also use AI to help keep students safe. These are protective controls: they assist people — your school and teachers — rather than making an automatic decision with a significant effect about a student, and they are never used for advertising.

Content-safety moderation Safety control

Screens student-submitted text (and free-form AI responses) for harmful content before it is stored or shown, so unsafe material can be blocked or withheld. No text is generated.

  • Provider: OpenAI (Moderation API)
  • Human oversight: A protective control, not an automated decision about a student; a teacher's review and the AI provider's own safety settings are compensating controls.

Self-harm and crisis detection Safety control

Screens student-typed text for indications of self-harm or crisis. When an indication is found, the student is shown crisis-support resources (such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and a minimized alert — with no message content — is sent to the school's designated safety contact so the school can follow its own student-safety procedure. It is not sent to parents or law enforcement by default, and detection is based on the safety concern, never a student's identity.

  • Information it uses: student-typed text (screened for a safety concern; no identity profiling)
  • Provider: OpenAI (Moderation API)
  • Human oversight: The school responds; lower-confidence signals go to a review lane, not an alert. The AI never counsels, diagnoses, or decides a crisis is real — it is a detection, referral, and notification layer only.
